Goats, apples, and e-Portfolio

I decided to take a small break from my e-Portfolio work today and went to the Sunflower Farm Creamery and Orchard Hill Farm orchard in Cumberland, which is roughly 20 minutes north of Portland. I wanted to see the farm famous for the goats in pajamas video (if you haven't seen it I've included above, it's so cute!). I got a free peck of apples at the Orchard (thank you city of Portland!), so for the next few weeks there will be lots of apples to accompany my work. I'm hoping an apple a day will really keep the doctor away, I would rather not get sick with all this work!

I had planned to accompany my work with my favorite female singers from the 90's, but I decided to go with Bach's cello suites instead. Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette, Paula Cole, and all the others will have to wait for another day!

Tonight I am focusing on comp A:

Demonstrate awareness of the ethics, values, and foundational principles of one of the information professions, and discuss the importance of intellectual freedom within that profession.

Time to review assignments from my intellectual freedom class!

Getting the ball rolling

I just finished putting together an e-Portfolio work folder in Google Drive. It includes a spreadsheet with all the comps and each class that satisfies the comp, as well as separate folders for each comp where I can put corresponding assignments. Blah, blah, blah.

Still awake?

Me either.

But seriously, it feels good to get the ball rolling, so to speak.

Today's study tunes:

Adios - Jesse y Joy
Welcome to England - Tori Amos
Mystic's Dream - Loreena McKennitt
Samain Night - Loreena McKennitt
King of Wishful Thinking - Go West
St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) -  John Parr
The Glory of Love - Peter Cetera
Rhythm Divine - Enrique Iglesias
At Ease - Jenny Dalton
A Drop in the Ocean - Ron Pope

A word of advice...

If there's one piece of advice I've heard repeatedly from my classmates, it's to start working on your e-Portfolio early. I've really started buckling down on my e-Port work recently. It's the semester before I officially enroll in the e-Port course. Looking at all the work ahead of me makes me realize one thing:

My classmates weren't kidding.

So, to those new to SJSU's i-School, start working on your e-Portfolio now! :)

The Competencies

  14. evaluate programs and services using measurable criteria;
  15. (For students entering from Spring 2015) Identify ways in which information professionals can contribute to the cultural, economic, educational, and social well-being of our global communities.;

And so it begins...

Hi everyone! My name is Kerry Purvis and I'm an MLIS graduate student at San José State University. I'm (hopefully) graduating this spring (2016) and have begun the arduous journey of completing my e-Portfolio.The e-Portfolio Handbook page states that "The goal of the e-Portfolio is to provide a program-based assessment to ensure that each student demonstrates mastery of all program learning outcomes (core competencies) for the degree before graduation." This involves compiling all of the work I've done the last four years, which is going to be a whole barrel of fun...OK, not really, but I had the brilliant idea of creating a blog document my e-Portfolio journey, and that is going to be fun! During my e-Portfolio journey I'm planning to visit the many coffee shops in Portland, Maine, and writing some quick reviews on them as well. I figure I'm going to need a lot of caffeine to get through this, so why not take advantage of all the coffee joints Portland has to offer?

I'm also going to include a section listing some of the music I listen to during my work, mainly for posterity. I think it will be interesting to look back down the road to see what music fueled my work. I have a tendency to listen to music I call ear crack (mindless, badly written pop songs), so if anything it will be amusing to see later. :)

By the way, here's the tunes I listed to during e-Portfolio work today. It turned into a Vienna Teng session. If you haven't listen to her you should check her out, she's an amazing musician!

Omaha by the Counting Crows
Chances by Five for Fighting
Why Georgia by John Mayer
Better Than Reality by Valerie Orth
Let Her Be The Beatles
Fortress Around Your Heart - Sting
King of Pain - The Police
Next Time I Fall In Love - Peter Cetera & Amy Grant
Good Night New York - Vienna Teng
My Medea - Vienna Teng
The Tower - Vienna Teng
Gravity - Vienna Teng
Blue Caravan - Vienna Teng

So that's it for my first entry. Thanks for reading! Time to get back to work. :)
